چکیده

A three dimensional mechanical model has been recently developed to simulate the Near Surface Mounted (NSM) Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) strips shear strength contribution to Reinforced Concrete (RC) beams throughout the entire loading process, as function of the Critical Diagonal Crack (CDC) opening angle. It was developed by fulfilling equilibrium, kinematic compatibility and constitutive laws of both intervening materials and bond between them. It takes into consideration all of possible failure modes that can affect the behaviour, at ultimate, of a single NSM strip, namely: loss of bond (debonding), semiconical concrete tensile fracture, rupture of the strip itself and a mixed shallow-semi-cone-plus-debonding failure. Besides, it allows the interaction among adjacent strips to be accounted for. The numerical results, in terms of both shear strength contribution and predicted cracking scenario are presented and compared with experimental evidence regarding some of the most recent experimental programs. From that comparison, a satisfactory level of prediction accuracy, regardless of the main parameters such as concrete mechanical properties, amount and inclination of strips, arises. The main findings, as well as the influence of some of the main intervening parameters, are shown.

Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Two Fixed-End RC Beams Strengthened With CFRP Bars in NSM Method

Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) material is currently being produced in different configurations and widely used to strengthen and retrofit concrete structures and bridges. It is also possible to apply other strengthening methods without changing the appearance or the dimensions of the structure. Near Surface Mounted (NSM) is a recent strengthening method using CFRP bars (rods or laminate strips...

Application of Near Surface Mounted (NSM) technique for Seismic Retrofitting of Heritage Buildings

The high vulnerability of the cultural buildings due to seismic actions urged researchers to retrofit them using reversible and compatible techniques. The application of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) for enhancing the structural behavior of masonry buildings, under seismic actions, has been studied by many researchers. The near-surface mounting (NSM) technique is a relatively new retrofitting ...

The Tension-Stiffening Contribution of NSM CFRP to the Behavior of Strengthened RC Beams

Tension stiffening is a characteristic behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams which is directly affected by the bond-slip property of steel bar and concrete interfaces. A beam strengthened with a near-surface mounted (NSM) technique would be even more affected by tension stiffening, as the NSM reinforcement also possess a bond-slip property. Yet assessing how much the tension stiffening of ...

FRP-RC Beam in Shear: Mechanical Model and Assessment Procedure for Pseudo-Ductile Behavior

This work deals with the development of a mechanics-based shear model for reinforced concrete (RC) elements strengthened in shear with fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) and a design/assessment procedure capable of predicting the failure sequence of resisting elements: the yielding of existing transverse steel ties and the debonding of FRP sheets/strips, while checking the corresponding compressive...

Proposed Design Procedure of Nsm Frp Reinforcement for Flexural and Shear Strengthening of Rc Beams

Near-surface mounted (NSM) fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcement has been found to perform efficiently as a flexural/shear strengthening technology for reinforced concrete (RC) members, while offering some additional practical advantages with respect to the most widespread technique of externally bonded laminates. This paper presents a design procedure for flexural and shear strengthenin...
